“Take your broken heart, make it into art.” – Meryl Streep, quoting Carrie Fisher
I adore that quote by Meryl/Carrie. It expresses an idea that has served me well throughout my years as an artist, working in a world that isn’t always easy for an empath. I’ve found that putting my heart into creativity during tumultuous times can be rather healing. My Bag Lady Series is a case in point, where I used my camera to capture the thoughts and feelings that emerged for my subjects and I during the Me Too Movement. I knew that at some point, I’d do the same with my experiences and the recurring themes that came up for me during the pandemic. I just haven’t been ready.
Until now.
I’ve taken the feelings of isolation I experienced over the last two years and turned them into art – with a little dark humor and a lot of sexiness. I’m still recovering from the effects of the pandemic on my business, my playfulness, my confidence, my connection to others, my sensuality, my creativity and ultimately my strength in survival (all themes I included in this project), but these images reflect my belief that even in times of uncertainty and struggle, beauty still exists. It all depends on how you’re looking at it.
I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed creating them.
Special thanks to everyone who helped with this!
